Lot #1625 - 1977 represented a very important year for both the Indianapolis 500 and Oldsmobile. Oldsmobile returned to Indy with its luxurious 88 pace car that paced A.J Foy's last Indy win as a driver. For the race it marked the first time a racer had broken the magical 200 mph barrier (Tom Sneva) and the first time that a female driver would be competing (Janet Guthrie). For Oldsmobile, when the Delta 88 took to the famed Brickyard track in 1977 with Hollywood's James Garner at the wheel, it marked the 6th time that Oldsmobile would be selected to set the pace for the start of the Indianapolis 500. This new Delta 88 was totally re-engineered and re-designed to achieve greater efficiency, featuring a chassis and body nearly a foot shorter and 700 pounds lighter than its predecessor.
