Description
Lot #78 - This is a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS 396. This is no ordinary Camaro, but has the potent L78 396/375hp solid lifter motor. This is no re-creation but the real deal. This car has the complete original numbers matching drivetrain. It also has the "X22" on the Trim Tag which only big block cars received. The L78 motor had a single fuel line that fed the motor and this car still has its original single fuel line still in place. The motor has a casting date of June 11, 1969, the engine build date is July 23, 1969 and the car was built in the first week of October which is where it should be. The engine casting number is 3969854 and the stamping on the front pad is T0723JH (JH means 1969 Camaro special high performance 375 horsepower 4-speed manual transmission). The VIN is down by the oil filter housing and is etched into the block and not stamped so it is harder to read, but since the VIN is so easy to decipher on this car we 100% confirmed it to match the VIN on the dashboard, the title and the transmission. The casting number on the heads is 3964291 and dated F 49 (June 4, 1969). These heads make the car very rare as only a hand full of the last L78's got the new style square port heads designed for the new LS6 motor made for 1970 Chevelle's. The intake manifold casting number is 3933163 which is correct for the L78 as well as the correct distributor and the alternator. The transmission is the correct original Muncie M21 and also has a matching VIN to the car as well on the case. The original 12-bolt 3.55 posi-traction rear has the codes C BT 09 02 (Camaro 3.55 posi-traction build date Sept. 02, 1969 and an E below the axle code for Eaton posi-traction) stamped into the axle tube. This car was built as a total sleeper and has only a few factory options, this car was built for speed. The body on this car is all original sheet metal including the rear quarter panels and floors. The exterior was recently re-painted black and looks nice and is very shiny. The interior is in excellent condition and looks mostly original with the exception of the upgraded wood steering wheel. Under the hood is nice and clean as well and looks great. The trunk is nice and solid. The undercarriage is very impressive considering it has original sheet metal and is not undercoated. Mechanically this car is a superstar and is a monster. We just had the motor totally rebuilt from top to bottom and runs as good or better than it did the day it drove off the showroom floor back in 1969. It runs and drives down the road without any issues and is really a pleasure to drive.
