Description
Lot #1566 - Featured in May 1999 "Road & Track". The GTR was a collaboration between Specter Werkes Sports, who ran their own race team of Corvettes, and two Chevrolet dealerships, Purifoy Chevrolet in Fort Luptin, Colorado, and Cauley Chevrolet, in West Bloomfield, Michigan. This GTR was originally sold by Purifoy Chevrolet. This is the 5th GTR Specter Werkes built. This car was featured as 1 of 5 "Over the Top Extreme Sports Cars" in the May 1999 issue of "Road & Track" magazine. Two copies of the magazine included with the purchase of the car. The original dealer sticker was at $102,434 in 1998. When the LS6 heads first came out in early 1999, Purifoy Chevrolet sent this car back to Specter Werkes for a set of polished & ported LS6 heads, which added approximately another 65hp to the already impressive 465hp, taking this "Extreme Sports Car" to 530hp. So when this car was featured by "Road & Track", it still had the 465hp produced with the LS1 heads. But when it rolled off the dealer showroom to its first owner, it was pumping out 530hp and its final delivery price bulged to $110,000. The car was built from a brand new 1998 pace car model with Z51 suspension. Specter Werkes lowered the stance of the car, modified the shock travel and tuned up the Z51 suspension's handling performance with Hotchkiss anti-sway bars. It sits on HRE wheels with 285/35-ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sports on the front and 345/30-ZR19's on the rear. That's nearly 14"-wide rubber on the rear. Specter Werkes swelled the width of the car by 3" up front and 6" in the rear. The body is more than just a body kit. It's a body-off, hand-built custom. The only factory body parts are the hood and trunk/hatch lids. Everything else (front & rear bumpers, quarter panels, rocker panels, and door skins) is a direct chassis bolt-on panel designed by Specter Werkes. Pace car 6-way power sport seats, custom embroidered with GTR logo, Specter Werkes serial-numbered GTR dash plaque, B&M ripper shifter, and the engine compartment is set off with a custom-painted intake manifold and lots of carbon fiber on fuel rail covers, fuse panel cover and air box. The motor is Specter Werks' "Matrix II" package, built by Katech, the builder of the Rolex 24-hour-winning engine. Katech turned the stock 346cid motor into a nearly indestructible forged and stroked 382cid motor. The 382 Stroker is running about 11:1 CR, forged pistons and crank, billet rods, custom cam, ported and polished LS6 heads, TPIS long tube headers and Corsa exhaust. Dale Earnhardt Jr. owns one of the GTR's. To illustrate the rarity of the GTR, according to Jeff Nowicki, owner of Specter Werkes, of the 28 GTR's built only three, including this one. have ever changed hands from the original owners. By the way - beware of GTR imitations. This car was born a GTR. The real thing. Less than 56,000 original miles.
