Description
Lot #1036 - Extremely rare - 1 of only 61 red Shelby Hertz cars ever built. Even more rare is that this Shelby has its original block with the VIN number stamped. The Ford VIN number on the car as well as on the block match and have been verified with the SAAC (Howard Pardee) as correct for Shelby VIN number 6S845. The car has spent its life in California and Texas and retains its original rust-free sheet metal. The fenders appear to be original as well because their date codes are consistent with the rest of the car. The car also has its original Hertz magnum wheels, Cobra tachometer, competition sear belts and more. Power steering, brakes and correct period Mark IV air conditioning were added. Per SAAC records and documentation included with the car. The car has 351W heads, BOSS 302 crank and rods, 3:23 rear end with Traction-Lok, Global West lowered front end and the battery was relocated to the trunk. The additions to the car make it a pleasure to drive but could be removed to satisfy the Shelby purist. Shelby #6S845 comes with years of documentation and has been featured on the covers of "Mustang Monthly" and "Mustang Illustrated". The car also has Carroll Shelby's signature on the glovebox door. On December 21, 1965, the Hertz Car Rental Company ordered 1,000 Shelby GT350's from Shelby America that would be used as a promotion for the Hertz Car Rental Company. An H was added to the GT350 to designate these as "Hertz" cars. All 1,000 cars were supposed to be black with gold stripes but 61 red cars, 50 blue cars, 50 green cars and 50 white cars were delivered to the Hertz company. These cars became known as "Rent-A-Racers" and would be seen at local race tracks. It has also been said that enthusiasts would rent the cars long enough to swap out the desirable Shelby engine and replace it with their Mustang engine then return the rental car to Hertz. Whether the car lost their original engines while owned by Hertz or during the following 40+ years after, it is a fact that many of these cars no longer have their original blocks. This is an opportunity to own an extremely rare red Shelby Hertz car with its original engine block.
