Description
George Harrison's original handwritten lyrics to his classic song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," on a single sheet of paper. On the reverse are the
lyrics to "Hey Jude," in the hand of the Beatles' road manager Mal Evans.
This draft is the earliest known version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and corresponds closely to his original acoustic-guitar recording - released for
the first time as the highlight of the latest Beatles album, LOVE. This working draft features Harrison's handwritten corrections, and has the following
lines not included in theWhite Album:
I look from the wings at the play you are staging
While my guitar gently weeps
As I'm sitting here doing nothing but aging
Still my guitar gently weeps
This is the most significant Beatles' lyric manuscript known to exist, as it reveals the personal attitude of a band member to the problems the band were
facing as this historic track was being recorded at Abbey Road.
At the bottom of the page Harrison has added the rueful comment "The band leader said he ain't playin' no more" - a clear reference to the troubled
atmosphere in the studio.
Mal Evans' transcription of McCartney's Hey Jude is believed to have been written out for use by one of the band members during the recording of this
song.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps was first recorded on acoustic guitar on July 25th 1968, using the lyrics written here. Revisions were later made to these lyrics,
and the final version was included in the White Album, featuring Eric Clapton on guitar, and completed on September 5th of the same year. RESERVE.
