Description
Lot #1549 - This close ratio four-speed, dual quad, posi-trac 409CI/409HP was built at the Janesville, Wisconsin plant and was purchased new in Omaha, Nebraska. The car was stored in a garage from 1969 to 1993, restored from 1993 to 1997 and underwent a second highly detailed restoration in 2000. The second highly detailed restoration (about as near perfect as you can get) has resulted in multiple Late Great Chevy National and Super Chevy Show restored original class wins and runner ups with scoring as high as 987 (out of 1,000). The cowl-tag confirms the car's red bucket seat Super Sport interior, Tuxedo Black paint and that the body was built in the 4th week of March in 1962 (code 3D). The following casting numbers and date codes confirm the correctness of this car (refer to Alan Colvin's Chevrolet by the Numbers: 1960-1964): Engine block - casting code 3788068 (409 1962 block only), with a T0522Qb stamp (T indicates Towanda, NY engine plant (only 409 plant), 0522 indicates the engine was put in a car on May 22, 1962 and QB indicates manual transmission, dual 4-BBL, 409 SHP; Date Code A2562 (Jan 25, 1962)Carburetors - Rear 3362S with a tag that includes Chevy part number 3815404 and a roll stamp of AM1 on base (change code A, date code of December, 1961); Front 3361S with a tag that includes Chevy part number 3815403 & date code of D2 (April, 1962) and a roll stamp of AD2 on base (change code A, date code of April, 1962); both carbs have horn 6-1518 & main body 0-1481 casting codes. Generator - Plate with part number 1102268(used on all 1962 409 applications); Date code 2C29-March 29, 1962 Water pump - Casting code GM - 3; date code B1462 - February 14, 1962 Aluminum bell housing - Casting code 3779553 (correct for a 1961 or 1962 409 car); date code cannot be seen with engine in car. Transmission main case - Casting code 11061T21-1C BO; date code 1-9-62. Transmission tail shaft - Casting code T10-7D R-2; date code 1-9-62 Rear end - Casting code 3789812 with a large P (indicates posi-traction); date code B62 (February 1962). The T0522QB engine block stamp may, or may not, indicate that the engine is not original. This stamp indicates the engine was installed in a car on May 22nd while the body build is the 4th week of March. Obviously, the block stamp could be a mis-stamping of a March 22nd engine installation (the January 25 date code on the block seems to make this a real possibility). However, one of the carbs has an April build date and final assembly of the car could have been delayed until May. It would be a significant challenge to find a more correct and/or higher quality investment grade example of the classic 1962 Chevy that ushered in the high performance muscle car era by winning races at the drag strip right off the showroom floor.
