Lot #980.1 - 1956 Pontiac Club de Mer was built by General Motors for the Motorama as an experimental laboratory on wheels. The 3/8 scale model was built as concept vehicle to travel with the full scale model. The current owner was told that after the Motorama, the 3/8 scale model was seized by Harley Earl and he sent it to the Pontiac Motor Division at which time it had installed a 6-volt Pontiac starter motor, 6-volt battery, steering apparatus and throttle switch for forward and reverse and given to one of his grandsons as a peddle car. This car was found by the current owner and in the early 1990's was restored by Fran Roxas to its currant show and running condition. The tires were remanufactured with the cooperation of General Motors exactly like the original tires which have the white lined sidewalls as well as white line going down the tire tread. This is one of the rarest pieces that still survives from the General Motors Motorama. This model is currently set up with a battery and runs. After the restoration in the early 1990's this model was displayed in the lobby of the General Motors Tech Center and after its showing General Motors manufactured a wooded travel crate with wheels for this car which will also go with the car in the sale. This crate is designed to be used as the display table for the model when the model is removed and placed on top of it with a curtain cover. This is the only 3/8 scale model of a Motorama car known to exist to the owner. This model has been featured in many magazines including a General Motors publicity shot of this scale model in the book titled, "Pontiac Dream Cars", "Show Cars and Prototypes", by Jesse Thomas. An actual picture of this car on its own display stand is included with the sale. What a great car for an exclusive collection or the rarest, most expensive peddle car to be gifted to a son or grandson!
