Lot #4.1 - This 1948 DeSoto Suburan four door, seven passsenger station wagon was sold new in March 1949 in Redding, CA and is one hour from the town of Burney. The original owner was the Burney Fire District. It is a station wagon, not an ambulance. When the town of Burney brought the DeSoto to the fire station, the back seat was removed, allowing the station wagon to be used as a first-call vehicle and ambulance, with the gurney to be placed through the trunk opening to the rear of the front seat. Other than the siren on the left front fender and the flashing lights at the front of the roof, it is now and has always been a station wagon. The DeSoto was taken out of service by the Burney Fire District in 1950, being replaced by an authentic 1950 Pontiac ambulance. The DeSoto was covered and stored on blocks in a warehouse in Burney until 1992. It was then restored in Santa Rosa, CA. The restorer replaced the original seat and covered both of them in naugahyde. The model S11 has a 139 1/2" wheel base, with a total length of 19 feet. It has a tip-toe fluid drive and easily accomodates seven passengers with seat belts for six. This land yacht has a gorgeous trunk floor of wood finished with chrome skid rails at the stern to the rear of the rear seat. It is at home either on the freeway or at a drive-in movie. Pressing a toggle switch under the dash, the horn or siren is activated. Actor Tom Bosley of "Happy Days" drove a 1948 DeSoto Custom Suburban.
