Description
Lot #1291 - This rotisserie-restored 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne is reportedly the world's only 2-door Fleetmaster built and powered by the 409ci V8 engine. Only 142 factory 409 cars were produced in 1961, with most being Impalas, Bel Airs or standard Biscaynes. This car is the only documented 409 Biscayne Fleetmaster known and was ordered new by drag racer Allen May at Capitol Chevrolet in Salem, OR. The order for the car was approved by the Oregon Chevrolet Zone Office, which issued a letter stating the car would be used for drag-racing purposes only. This car has been an Oregon car since new and has had the same owner since 1976. Features include the correct 409/360hp V8 engine backed by a T10 4-speed manual transmission with the 3.36 posi-traction rear end. The correct components were used throughout the restoration and the 409 features a new stock exhaust system, radio and heater delete. Additionally, the interior features new correct upholstery from SMS, new interior trim panels and floor covering. The Biscayne features show-quality glass and trim, the original rechromed bumpers and the original T3 headlights. It rides on the correct 14x6-inch 409 steel wheels with stock poverty caps and bias-ply tires. The correct spare tire jack and tool kit are included as well. The undercarriage and chassis have been beautifully restored, and the body has been refinished in the original Honduras Maroon paint. As a drag racer, the Fleetmaster Biscayne was the 1962 Winternational Champion and the 1982 World Finals Champion. This car took Second Place at the Grand National Roadster Show as well as the Outstanding Display Award, and has been featured in Super Chevy magazine twice, as well as on Torqtalk.com. Included in the sale are notarized testimonials from past owners, a Letter of Authenticity from Verne Fantz Jr. at Jersey Late Great Chevrolets, historical photos and a 5-page appraisal from Chevrolet historian and former editor for Super Chevy magazine Doug Marion. The Biscayne has 22,024 miles (mileage not indicated on the title).
