Description
Lot #62 - This 1972 MGB GT has been both cosmetically and mechanically restored. The MGB GT is the fixed-roof hatchback update of the MGB that was styled by Pininfarina. This GT is finished in Mineral Blue (BU-9) over a custom gray interior. Power is supplied by a 1.8-liter inline-4 with twin SU carburetors and backed by a rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission with overdrive. The gearbox has been rebuilt and swapped out for the stock non-overdrive unit. A new clutch, resurfaced flywheel, new slave cylinder, and new engine and transmission mounts were also installed at that time. While the engine was out the front and rear main seals, timing chain, alternator and battery were replaced and a tuneup was performed. The engine had already been rebuilt previously, and testing showed that it didn't need anything more. The rear differential was rebuilt with new bearings and seals, the rear springs were replaced and a tube-shock conversion was completed. The fuel tank, fuel pump and sender were replaced, along with the hoses and lines. The mechanical work was performed about 6,000 miles ago and is documented on the invoices that total over $10,000. Inside, the seats were recovered in a gray vinyl with blue piping, gray carpets were installed, and new door panels, headliner and pillar coverings were fitted. A wood-rimmed Tourist Trophy steering wheel (replacing the original steering wheel), Sony head unit with Bluetooth and iPod capability, and Pioneer speakers mounted in the side panels behind the front seats were also added. All of the Smiths instrumentation - which includes a 7,000-rpm tachometer and a 120-mph speedometer, instrument lighting and heater - are functional. One of the battery boxes under the rear seat has been converted to a hidden compartment that keeps valuables out of sight. This MGB GT runs fantastic. It has plenty of power and gets great gas mileage. With overdrive, it hits about 3,000 rpms at around 75 mph. The steering is tight and stiffly weighted, there are no unusual noises at any speed and the braking system works well. Included in the sale are repair manuals, the original steering wheel, repair records and various spare parts.
