Description
Lot #1094 - This car started as an original, unwrecked, genuine Chevrolet 1957 Corvette convertible with just 68,933 original miles at the time of the beginning of the project, and it's been driven less than 1,000 miles since. A restoration was completed about 20 years ago that first saw a completely new frame built to hold the stock 1957 body, but one that was much stronger than stock and one that would ride on the newer Corvette C4-style independent suspension. The suspension is complete as originally designed by GM for the C4 series Corvette with power rack & pinion steering and retains all the correct geometry for proper handling. A C5 series ZO6 5.7-liter V8 engine, a T56 6-speed manual transmission and a new Corvette differential were then installed. The exhaust system is built completely of polished stainless steel. The dual 3-inch exhaust pipes have a small stock-sized takeoff that allows some exhaust to come out the stock location in the bumper, while the balance outlets behind the rear tires. Upgraded brakes with drilled and slotted bigger rotors, later-style Corvette wheels and tires finish off the chassis. The rear fenders where widened 1 inch, allowing the use of wide 275/40x17 tires to fit properly. The door handles were replaced with flush units from a C5 Corvette. The front and rear round Corvette emblems were recessed into the body to look like today's cars. The original front turn signals were removed and replaced with custom-built turn signal lights built into the stock front fender scoops. The front grille was recessed so that the "teeth" are not so prominent. The 1957 rear taillights were replaced with units from a 1958 Corvette. A brand new custom-made stainless-steel gas tank was installed, and the complete car was plumbed and wired. The interior concept was to retain the look and feel of an original 1957 Corvette yet be upgraded to the comfort and convenience of today's Corvette - right down to the heated seats. The stock 1957 gauges were rebuilt and then black chromed so, while they are originals, they have a very modern look. The steering column was shortened and a custom smaller-diameter steering wheel was made to allow easier entry and exit from the car. The seats are custom and they provide better comfort and a lower seating position. The complete interior is covered in gray leather and is treated to the stock Corvette waffle pattern to appear just as the original design. An AM/FM/CD player is under the dash to provide the full functions, but out of sight. Likewise, the air conditioning and heat unit is also hidden under the dash with no noticeable ducts or vents.
