Description
Lot #222 - This 1971 Plymouth Satellite is finished in custom paint with pinstriping throughout and etched quarter windows. The 440ci engine was stroked to 500ci and runs well with less than 500 miles on it. Some of the engine features include ported Indy heads and ported manifold, and a COMP cam and gear drive. It’s backed by a 4-speed manual transmission and produces an estimated 850hp, and has an additional 400hp nitrous shot. The Holley 1050 Dominator has been modified to allow the car to run on pump fuel. The rear ladder bar/coilover Dana 60 suspension was professionally built, along with the full tubs and 20-gallon fuel cell. It features Competition Engineering chromed wheelie bars and a 6-point roll cage. The black vinyl and mohair interior sports GTX trim and a Rally dash. This one-owner custom Plymouth rides on Weld wheels with Mickey Thompson ET street slicks in back and Sportsman tires up front, with stopping power provided by front disc and rear drum brakes. This Satellite was the Hot Rod magazine cover car in February 1983.The feature article was photographed and written by Gray Baskerville, and the iconic cover was shot by famed Hot Rod magazine photographer Pat Brollier. It was also featured in Autobuff magazine in May 1984, Street Machine magazine in August 1983, Hot Rod’s Custom Painting Edition in 1983, Hot Rod’s 35 Years Edition in 1983, Hot Rod’s History of Hot Rodding edition in Sept. 2013, and Hot Rod “65 Years: Where It All Began” in 2013. It is featured in the books: “50 Years of Hot Rod,” and “Hot Rod Magazine: All the Covers.” It also appeared in the music video by the band Breaking Point, produced by Sony Records, for the song “One of a Kind.” It won nine straight First Place awards at World of Wheels and their award for Best Engine Compartment, and their first inaugural Phil Giamanco Memorial Outstanding Street Machine Award. Additional awards include multiple First Place awards for Pro Street at The Spring Fling Show in Los Angeles, and multiple Best of Show trophies and First Place awards at other events. In 2004 Hot Rod Mag joined up with Johnny Lightning to reproduce 24 of the most important cover cars in a die-cast models, including this one. The detailed reproductions included a card with the Hot Rod cover. It was also used in the ad in Hot Rod magazine for the series.
