Description
Lot #1017 - Built in 57 by 3 Minnesota amateurs with help from Duntov, Echidna is the most successful American racing special. This example is the most successful of the 3 Echidnas: Staver's 59 B-modified National champion. To win championship the Echidna had beaten the best of Ferrari, Maserati and our specials driven by professionals. Chevy based, with 283 ci bored to 339 with Rochester injection, alloy heads from Duntov, independent front and Positraction with Wattlink rear. The body is light weight Devin. Raced successfully till the seventies, its history is too long to list. Scarab driven by Jeffords, Lister Corvette by Windrige, Maserati 300S by Lloyd Ruby are a few of its victims. All the cars beaten then and now by Echidna, sell for multi-million dollars. Dozen of period magazines, many B/W pictures are included. Only 4 owners since new, the car was reconditioned to "B" mod specs with modern safety equipment by Jim Bartlett in the late eighties. Bartlett successfully raced the car, including four Monterey Historics. The present owner acquired it after 2002 season, obtained a full set of FIA papers, and was invited to Goodwood last year. Change in plans prevented him to attend, but a sister car (no.62) driven by Speer performed very well against multi-million European cars driven by professionals. This important piece of American history would be a star of any collection or a front runner in any prestige vintage race.
