Description
Lot #1297 - Kaiser-Darrin sports cars were introduced in January, 1954, and remained in production until June of the same year. Out of 435 ever produced, this is body number 185. It's finished in correct Champagne White lacquer, scarlet pincrush-style pleated leather seats with matching carpets and a landau folding convertible top. The car retains its original 161/90hp Willys L-head engine and 3-speed manual transmission. It has been completely restored with close attention to keeping it a factory-correct original. The all-fiberglass body was a creation of Glasspar, a well-known manufacturer of fiberglass boats made in this period. Designed by none other than Howard "Dutch" Darrin, this car was a beautifully designed, one-of-a-kind vehicle. The most fascinating aspect of this car was Darrin's beloved pocket doors, which slid forward into the front fenders to permit easy entry and exit. They were the Kaiser-Darrin trademark, and they remain its best-remembered feature. It has many unique features such as a small 14-slot chrome grille, chrome wire-spoke wheel covers, Lucite wind wings, a dash-mounted rearview mirror and floor shifter. This is a an extremely unique vehicle, with low production numbers and intricate details.
