Description
Lot #635.1 - This Y84 Special Edition, WS6 black and gold, "Smokey and the Bandit" car has 64,195 original miles. It was frame-off restored. This is the last of the Pontiac-powered 4-speed muscle cars. 1979 marked the last year Pontiac produced a big 400ci-powered Trans Am. This is one of 1,107 produced. This also was the first year for 4-wheel disc brakes. This car has many unique qualities. Restore A Muscle Car was contracted by a GM executive to locate and restore a rare, low-production 1979 Trans Am - this is that very car. A clean car was procured for the extensive restoration. This was a tenuous restoration that literally consumed 2,700 man hours. The TA was completely disassembled and stripped to bare metal. The frame was removed and the entire drivetrain was rebuilt. The body of this vehicle was gone over from front to back, and the body fit is laser-straight and better than new. Once the body was prepared, it was given a fresh coat of the correct Starlight Black (code 19), using the best modern Spies Hecker base coat/clear coat paint. It was wet-sanded to a mirror finish. The black interior was carefully restored as well. The frame was stripped, and all chassis components were replaced and/or refinished in the correct original factory finishes. The engine was sent out and completely rebuilt. The 400ci 6.6-liter Pontiac engine block was honed and new pistons, rings and bearings installed. The crank was checked and lightly refinished. The 6X heads were checked and given a valve job, along with new valves and valve springs. Everything was reassembled, and the entire engine assembly was given a coat of the correct Pontiac engine paint. No stone was left unturned, and the interior was completely redone with nothing but the best of correct materials. All instruments and gauges were checked for operation and repaired or replaced if necessary. All wire harnesses were replaced as needed. This car comes with a complete set of Pontiac Historic Services (PHS) paperwork and Pontiac Division Window Sticker, and was signed by Burt Reynolds.
