Description
Lot #659 - This is one extremely rare Ferrari 512 Boxer. This 1979 Boxer was imported legally (very unusual) into the United States and has the federal paperwork to prove it. Manufactured on December 4, 1979, this is one of the last carbureted 512s made. The 365 GT4 BB was updated as the 512 BB in 1976, resurrecting the name of the earlier Ferrari 512 racer. The name 512 referred to the car's 5-liter, 12-cylinder engine, a deviation from Ferrari's established practice of naming 12-cylinder road cars (such as the 365 BB) after their cylinder displacement. The engine was enlarged to 4,942cc, with an increased compression ratio of 9.2:1. Power was slightly down to 360hp, while a dual-plate clutch handled the added torque and eased the pedal effort. Dry-sump lubrication prevented oil starvation in hard cornering. The chassis remained unaltered, but wider rear tires (in place of the 365's equally-sized on all four corners) meant the rear track grew 63mm. External differentiators included a new chin spoiler upfront, incorporated in the bumper. A NACA duct on the side provided cooling for the exhaust system. At the rear there were now twin lights and exhaust pipes on each side, instead of triple units as on the 365 GT4 BB. The 512 Boxer was made between 1976 and 1984. The carbureted model was made between 1976 and 1980. Only 929 total carbureted 512s were made between 1976 and 1980. Only a handful were legally imported into the U.S. - and imported versus legally imported (with paperwork) are two different things. This car comes with all its the federal paperwork for legal import from February 1980. This Ferrari has been regularly serviced at Ferrari dealerships, with the last service in May 2015. Included are all service records, manuals and books, and jack tool kit. Clutch and belts have less than 2,500 miles on them. This Koenig Special was completed directly from the factory when new, and the paint is believed to be original paint from 1979/1980. It has intentionally been left untouched to show no accidents and high care, resulting in the paint lasting more than 35 years in this condition. Very few Koenig cars were converted. Willy Koenig started independent tuning operations in 1974 with the first Ferrari 365 BB supplied to Germany. Only the finest materials are used, tested on test stands, in wind tunnels, and under extreme racing and road conditions, and tested and approved by the German Technical Supervisory Authority (TUV). Cost of the upgrades were approximately 50% of the original Ferrari. Only 20,200 kilometers, about 12,500 original miles (mileage not indicated on title). 5-speed manual transmission.
