Description
Lot #1430 - One of just 2,246 produced in 1962. This two-family-owned from new 190SL has had an extensive frame-off restoration. It has a matching-numbers 1.9-liter engine, 4-speed manual transmission, correct light blue exterior with tan top and correct red leather interior. It also has a Becker AM/FM radio, original Build Sheet, owner's manuals and sales brochures. The car was purchased new in November 1962 by a prominent New York Italian crime family member, who was the target of an attempted assassination shortly after purchasing the car. The bullet narrowly missed the intended target, but did pierce the windshield of this very car, which he was driving at the time. In the 1970s the car was traded by the original owner to a neighbor for a Cadillac convertible. The original owner's son promised his father that he would one day purchase the car back. In 1984 his dad passed away, and during the trip home for the funeral he contacted the neighbor, who agreed to sell him the 190SL. In going through his father's belongings, he found some original documentation for the car as well as the original windshield, which his father had kept - bullet hole and all. That windshield, with the original 1962 New York Inspection Sticker still attached, is included with the sale of this car.
