Description
Lot #1441 - The attention to specific details and expert craftsmanship, with parts sourced from North America and Europe. From the full-sliding sunroof to the totally revamped, 1600 dual-port engine, this microbus captures the look and nostalgia of the '60s. The two-year, heavily documented and photographed, rotisserie, nut-and-bolt restoration is a compilation of the expertise of three well-known builders. The body spent the better part of a year on a rotisserie; the underside was media-blasted and new belly pans were installed and painted; each panel on the van was meticulously finished to the highest standard, including the long driver's-side panel, which is amazingly straight. This VW bus wears the original color combination of Sea Blue and Cumulus White. The body and original slash bumpers sport new deluxe trim from Grumpy's Metal Works that finish the exterior restoration. Front and rear safari windows were installed, as well as original, correct date-coded skylight glass and side windows. The interior is hand-tailored with current textiles that match the original, to accomplish a period-correct look and feel; the original Aero Papyrus/White combination looks great with the exterior paint. A new sliding canvas, full-length sunroof was installed with all new mechanicals from VW Sunroofs Inc. The floors are covered with German-style rubber mats and authentic square-weave carpet. The driveline was built and installed by a master technician with over 40 years of air-cooled experience and knowledge. His work includes a completely rebuilt 1600cc factory dual-port engine, using vintage parts to keep that OE look. Complete nut-and-bolt restoration of the front and rear axles, brakes and suspension along with a freshly rebuilt Freeway Flyer transmission. New wiring harness and refurbished electronics were installed, including a 12-volt conversion. Period-correct whitewall tires from Coker Tire complete the look.
