Description
Lot #1308 - In 1957, Bruce Morgan, a blue-collar working truck driver of San Gabriel, CA, purchased this 283 fuel-injected Bel Air Sports Coupe from Calliau Chevrolet in South Pasadena. The car was a dealer "demo" with 2,000 miles. On weekends and times between his day job, he drove to the drag strips, raced the car and drove it home. Morgan, a talented driver, began racing exclusively on NHRA-sanctioned tracks. Winning more than losing, he set his sights on the NHRA World Championship in B/S Stock. In 1961, his talent paid off, and he and the '57 Bel Air ended up in the history books. With the help of "Dyno" Don Nicholson, Bruce Morgan achieved an undefeated racing year with no sponsorship. At the U.S. Nationals Awards Ceremony in Indianapolis, Morgan won the World Championship in B/S and the Top Stock Eliminator Awards. In addition, he was presented a 1962 Pontiac from the Hurst Corporation. He hooked the Pontiac to the back of the '57 Bel Air and hauled it home to California. Later that year he sold the '57 Chevy to the Tindle Brothers (of the Orange Crate Special fame) in Portland, OR. They sold the car within a month and it returned to the NHRA Drag Racing circuit. The car has had 12 owners and has been raced over 800 times in its 50+ year career. Manual transmission.
