Lot #1337 - The 1937 Cord has been called "the outstanding American contribution to automobile design." It was the first American-designed and built front-wheel-drive car with independent front suspension. The design and styling of the Cord is the work of Gordon M. Buehrig, who was hired as the chief designer at Duesenberg after working for Harley Earl at GM. Arguably one of the most easily recognized American cars of all time, with its "coffin" nose, Art Deco styling and hidden headlamps, the Cord 812 was one of three American cars included in New York's Museum of Modern Art "Eight Automobiles" 1951 exhibit. This Cord, Serial Number 1876H, was manufactured in February and March 1937 and is one of 404 naturally aspirated 812 Phaetons produced in total. It is one of just 70 believed to be produced in the second and final year of production. Well-known Cord engine expert Bill Richardson of Richardson Restoration and Machine Works rebuilt the Lycoming 289/125hp V8 engine. The 4-speed transmission located in front of the engine has been rebuilt as well. This car appeared in the 2004 Cole Porter movie "De-Lovely" starring Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd.
