Description
Lot #1008 - Still regarded as one of the best sedans ever built, the Mercedes-Benz 600 marked the ascendancy of the Stuttgart marque back to the pinnacle of luxury, performance and prestige just 20 years after the end of World War II. The 600 had everything that an increasingly wealthy upper class could want, including performance with 300hp and 434 ft/lbs torque from the 6.3 Liter overhead camshaft fuel injected V8 engine. A comfortable yet competent ride was assured with fully independent suspension on load-compensating air springs. There were disc brakes all around, central door locks, power steering and two separate climate control systems. Recognized today as a stupendous achievement in technology, design, construction, comfort and performance, the contrast between the 600 and pre-war prestige Mercedes of fewer than 30 years before was like night and day. The 600 was finesse, coddling and advanced technology; a paradigm shift achieved in less than a generation. Now almost a half-century old, this 1967 Mercedes-Benz 600 short wheelbase sedan is a beautiful, well-maintained example that works. Largely original mechanically but continuously maintained in exceptional condition, it is presented in black with black leather interior, both of which have been redone to high standards appropriate to the 600. The lavish interior wood trim also has been redone to perfection. Fitted with a sliding sunroof, chrome wheel arch moldings, air conditioning, rear seat headrests and a Becker Europa radio, it accommodates just four people in bucket-style front seats and a bench/bucket rear seat with fold-down armrest. Paint, chrome, upholstery and carpets have been redone to the standards of Mercedes-Benz craftsmen. The engine compartment is clean and crisp without being overdone.
