Description
Lot #5035 - In 1965, Ralph Morrison Jr., public relations supervisor of Sunray DX Oil Company, Tulsa, OK, put together a promotional campaign involving auto racing to market their products. History proved it was very successful. In 16 months, they went on to race at such famous places as Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen, Riverside, LeMans and in SCCA. Morrison went to Don Yenko, who had a special relationship with GM factory and Zora Duntov, to get this effort off the ground. This particular DX car is built by Yenko, because the factory L88 that was ordered didn't arrive in time for the 1968 Daytona 24-Hour race. Don Yenko took a 435 Rally Red hardtop convertible Corvette off the showroom floor and built and transformed it into a screaming DX L88 racer. He then raced it with co-driver Peter Revson (of Revlon fame). The next race that year was the Sebring 12 Hours, which Don raced with world-renowned driver Pedro Rodriguez, and set a new GT lap record as car #2. This #2 DX L88 car became his personal racer, and that year he also won the SCCA Midwest Division Title. It was registered to race at LeMans 24 Hours but cancelled due to political upheaval in France. Sunray DX, a well-known Midwestern Oil Company, was absorbed by the larger Sunoco Oil during the 1968 season and the DX chapter came to a close. In a short time it made a huge impact in the racing circuit world. One of five that made up the team sponsored by Sunray DX, it raced in the livery at Sebring 12 Hours. The car has received the coveted NCRS American Heritage Award representing Corvette legacy. It is well documented in a thick binder with a complete chain of ownership history. **SOLD ON BILL OF SALE ONLY**
