Description
Lot #1108 - This former national record-holding drag car is now owned by David Ellis. David bought this car in December 1978 from Wade Gainer and Ray Batterson. Wade Gainer bought the car from Dale Sheeks in 1975. Prior to Dale Sheeks buying the car it had been a demonstrator for Carl Schmidt Chevrolet in Perrysburg, OH. Dale Sheeks purchased the car to build a race car for A/SA NHRA. The original L78 396/375hp engine was replaced December 1969 with an LS6 454/450hp for racing. After Wade Gainer bought the car, it raced in various national events and was known as the "Smith, Gainer and Batterson Chevelle." The engine was built by Truppi-Kling, the same engine builders as Ray Allen's car, winning the Winter Nationals in 1975, holding national records in NHRA and IHRA driven by Fred Smith. It is in August 1975 Super Chevy and on the cover of Chevy Bible. It had been changed to 1971 configuration to be legal in B/SA and it was that way when David Ellis bought it in 1978 with 5,281 miles, minus engine, components and transmission. In 1982, it was painted Aqua Blue. The Holley carburetor 4457, 3-speed automatic transmission, torque converter and cylinder heads are correct because they are from a 1970 L78 Chevelle assembled two days earlier in Kansas City, MO. Restoration started in 2006 to appear like the "Smith and Gainer Chevelle" and street legal with Hooker headers, street slicks and Badlanz cutouts. It is now painted Forest Green with decals by Outlaw Tee's, Nauvoo, IL. The block is an upgraded LS6 454/450hp, Block #3963512, block pad #CE057129, casting date L-8-9 (12/08/1969). Options include posi-traction 3.55 ratio axle, Soft Ray tinted glass on all windows, power windows, front bumper guards, door edge guards, windshield washer fluid level, power steering, wheel well molding, rear mirror light, IP gauges, electric clock, trunk light, underhood light, ash tray light, glove compartment light, windshield antenna, AM/FM radio and rear speaker. Comes with original Build Sheet.
