Description
Lot #742 - This 300SL Gullwing coupe is one of 311 built for the 1956 model year, which was the last full year for the Gullwing as the factory switched exclusively to roadster production in the first months of 1957. It was sold new in Texas and in the care of one Texas owner from 1967 until 2001. In 1985 at approximately 80,000 original miles, Rennsport Werkstatt of Tulsa, OK, was commissioned to carry out a 2,000 hour, cost no object, concours level restoration. Meticulous attention was paid to doing everything properly with no detail left unattended. The body was refinished in Silver Grey Metallic exactly as it left the factory, the mechanicals were rebuilt and restored, factory original/NOS parts used whenever possible, and set of factory optional aerodynamic belly pans was sourced and added. Since completion, the car has been meticulously kept and carefully used to preserve the outstanding quality of the restoration. It has been enjoyed in events ranging from Gullwing Group tours to the 2010 California Millie, and the car has been freshly inspected and serviced by marque specialists Fast Cars LTD. The servicing invoices are on file in addition to an unbroken chain of receipts that date back to 1970, including complete restoration documentation. Also included is the copy of the original factory build record, the owner's manual and complete factory tool roll. Per the factory records, this 300SL retains its matching numbers chassis, body and engine block.
