Description
Lot #3031 - GM unveiled this special 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe at the November 2008 SEMA show. It was the first time a modified turbocharged version of the soon-to-be-released Solstice coupe was seen by the public. An early unmodified prototype was initially revealed at the February 2008 New York Auto Show. Based on strong acceptance, the RWD Solstice Coupe GXP was scheduled to hit America's roadways in early 2009. The regular production version was to be powered by the same 260hp turbocharged 2.0 Liter Ecotec 4 cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission used in the Solstice GXP convertible. The SEMA Solstice GXP coupe, however, was equipped with a GM Performance Parts Stage 2 performance kit and performance air intake kit, which increased output to about 290hp. The car also featured a GM Performance Parts cat-back exhaust system and a suspension kit that Pontiac described as "race-ready." Unfortunately, the exterior of the euro-styled Solstice coupe was frequently understated. The car's Hydro Blue racing stripe was originally intended to inspire a graphics kit from GM Accessories, while the wheels were simply polished factory units already slated for 2009. Blue accent stitching on the leather-trimmed seats, iPod interface and pedal covers were in-tune with desirable features of the day. The roof was strengthened with additional support, including aluminum roof bow with aluminum brackets. A lightweight magnesium roof frame weighed just 31lbs, easily removed by one person. The cover was made of sheet molding compound. Because the change to a coupe body style meant only a slight increase in weight, no drivetrain or suspension changes were necessary. Much of the interior remained the same as that of the convertible, with the addition of the area behind
the seats being redesigned for easy cargo access. The removal of the folding-top mechanism revealed a flat cargo floor and several storage compartments. The cargo area's covered bins provided secure storage for smaller items. The coupe was powered by a standard 2.4 Liter Ecotec 4 cylinder generating 173hp, while the GXP was equipped with a 2.0 Liter turbo Ecotec with 260hp.
