Description
Lot #1305 - In late 1930, just before WWII, the essence of style in an automobile for any connoisseur would have been the Delahage, Delage or Bugatti, and here in America, the Lincoln Zephyr. The Zephyr emulated the graceful sweeps and curves and the flowing sensual body lines of the art deco era. It was grace in motion even at rest. Many still consider it the best looking three-window coupe ever made. Often, custom builds are better left stock. The originally intended esthetic is compromised with modern day bling, disproportionate chips and mechanical devices that are best left in the garage. This Zephyr, a landmark automobile, deserved much more than the typical custom rod. This grand tourer is an outlier. A study in subtle restraint. The body has been restored to it's original form and is finished in carbon gray metallic with stainless steel trims accented in black. There was no need to shave ornamentation, like door handles, hood and trunk latches; they are works of art. The Pierce-Arrow style faired-in oval headlamps are backed by LEDs for modern drive-ability. The interior begins with lit V12 door sills. It is finished in wool broadcloth, Wollsdorf leather and German wool tweed carpet to create an esthetic that respects the original design. Instrumentation has been restored and re-calibrated to 200 mph. Comfort is guaranteed with the Vintage air and heat, electronic windows, integrated Bluetooth audio, navigation systems, remote start, alarm system and radar detection/laser jamming modules at both ends of the vehicle. Replacing the original V12 power with a GM or Ford crate motor would have been sacrilege. The 6 Liter V12 engine (acquired from Cosworth Engineering in Wellingbrough, England) is mated to a pro-built 4L60E automatic transmission, aluminum drive shaft and Moser differential. Exhaust, driven through 2 1/2 inch stainless produces a crescendo reminiscent of a Formula One car. The custom built chassis, with six-piston caliper brakes, adjustable shocks, independent front suspension and variable air ride, along with a corner balance within 25 lbs. on each wheel, produces a superior handling and drivable automobile. Detail, singular power and outlier esthetics rival the best contenders in this elite class.
