When Buick hit the green light on its 1987 Regal, it opted to paint most of them in ultra-conservative grays and blacks, despite the model year being the first year Buick offered the turbo engine as a standalone option for any Regal. This decision made 1987 the only year you could order a turbocharged Buick in a color other than black or gray.
Even the most hardcore Buick enthusiast will admit that most Turbo Regals look pretty much the same. Inside and out, there is very little variety in appearance and the modifications performed. Sorry, chrome turbo shields and valve cover breathers do not count.
While sticking to black and gray was certainly a good styling decision since the colors complement the slab-sided, square body lines perfectly, it does not make for a very diverse population of cars.
Not all 1987 Buick Turbo Regals are lost to a sea of uniformity. One eye-catching custom is crossing the Barrett-Jackson 2022 Las Vegas Auction block June 30-July 2 in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center with No Reserve.
According to the consigner, the build took three years to complete. It has since become known as the “Silver Bullet” and graced the covers of GM High-Tech magazine and Car Craft magazine. The car was a Carlisle GM Nationals Invite and winner, Chicago World of Wheels Best in class back-to-back and MCCN winner.
Built for the street or strip, this ’87 Buick Turbo Regal has been finished in Silver and retains its heavy steel doors, deck lid, and shaved chrome bumpers. The only fiberglass component on the vehicle is the hood.
Under the fiberglass hood, the Buick is powered by a 276ci Buick Motors Stage II engine, backed by a Billet TH400 automatic transmission with a Neil Chance torque convertor.
A SCAT Billet crankshaft was installed in the engine along with Carrillo rods and JE Pistons. The engine is topped with aluminum 14-bolt Buick Motorsport cylinder heads. It comes fitted with COMP Cams billet roller camshaft with TD roller rockers.
Ancillary components include a custom sheet metal Hogan titanium intake manifold and 160 lbs/hr injectors, supplied by a Weldon pump amassing fuel from a custom deep sump gas tank.
The engine features an MSD ignition system tuned with a FAST XFI standalone computer.
Spooling this car is a PT 88 4-bolt turbocharger from Precision Turbo and Engine, producing 25lbs of boost. Utilizing ATR stainless headers, the 5-inch custom down-pipe feeds the Borla custom exhaust.
The Buick was fitted with a Chromoly roll cage, and it received custom fabricated front inner fender wells. A custom Mark Williams Ford 9-inch rear end sits neatly nestled between the custom-fabricated rear mini tubs.
The rear suspension was converted from standard shocks and struts to a ladder bar system using Koni coilovers.
The interior features charcoal died interior trim and leather upholstered stock seats where the driver can monitor the engine’s vitals using Autometer gauges on the dash.
Built to take on the street and the drag strip, this silver bullet is sure to turn some heads in Las Vegas.
