As the bidding action on the Barrett-Jackson auction block in recent years has made clear, both classic and modern Broncos have become staggeringly popular among enthusiasts, who are drawn to the model’s off-road prowess and rugged good looks. The Ford Bronco first hit the trails – and the road – in 1966 and reappeared for its much-anticipated sixth generation with an updated retro look in 2021.
When the Bronco made its debut in the 1960s, it was offered in three different body styles: roadster, sport utility and wagon. Today, Ford’s off-road machine is available in both two-door and four-door options, as well as a small sport SUV. The modern Bronco is available with an impressive array of trim levels, each comprised with options to meet a variety of needs, from those of an off-road warrior to a soccer mom. The trim options span from base to performance-focused, with options for luxury as well.
Depending on the year, the first-gen Bronco came with either a 100-horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine or a 200-horsepower V8. Today’s popular off-road machine comes with a choice of a 6-cylinder 2.7-liter EcoBoost with 330 horsepower or a 4-cylinder 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with 300 horsepower.
Original Broncos were equipped with a 3-speed manual transmission and were later offered with a 3-speed automatic, while today’s sixth-generation model is offered with a 7-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic.
From its first generation to the sixth, the Ford Bronco has evolved significantly, offering near endless factory customization and a solid entry point for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors or simply drive their kids to and from school in one impressive machine.
