There are always incredible moments at a Barrett-Jackson auction. But today saw one of those moments that will be remembered as one of the biggest – and most emotional – in the nearly 50-year history of the company.
The tone was set early on when Las Vegas native and Army Reservist J.R. Phelps performed a stirring rendition of the National Anthem.
Not long after, the packed auction arena grew silent as a special video was played to honor and remember the victims of the terrible shooting tragedy that occurred in Las Vegas only weeks earlier. A bouquet of flowers lay on an empty chair in the front row of the bidder section, in remembrance of Thomas Day Jr., one of the 58 victims of the tragic event and the son of a longtime Barrett-Jackson customer. Las Vegas first responders gathered onstage as the Southern Nevada Combined Honor Guard reverently marched on, followed by a very special 2007 Shelby GT500 Super Snake (Lot #3004) from the personal collection of Barrett-Jackson President Steve Davis. Both Davis and Barrett-Jackson Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson spoke emotionally and passionately about what had transpired and thanked people for turning out for this first event at Mandalay Bay since the tragedy. Through tear-filled eyes, they explained how 100% of the money raised from the sale of the car would go to Las Vegas first responders through the Injured Police Officers Fund, and urged people to bid from the heart.
And they did. Bidding escalated quickly from $200,000 to $500,000, then $750,000 – with the crowd going wild as the bid reached $1 million and the hammer came down. The generous winning bidder was DC Solar, whose COO, Paulette Carpoff, said the company wanted first responders to know that it stands with them and is proud to help possible. Two other “cars for a cause” crossed the block today. Built at the SEMA Garage, a 1972 Ford Maverick (Lot #3005) was the project of movie star, director and car enthusiast Sung Kang of “Fast & Furious” fame, who brought together a team of motivated automotive professionals and students to design and customize the car. The entire sale price of $95,000 will go to the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund, helping students who wish to make a career in the automotive industry.
Lot #3006 – a 1965 Shelby Cobra Re-creation Roadster – hammered for $150,000 to benefit Convoy of Hope, to support ongoing relief and efforts to rebuild in Texas and Florida in the aftermath of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The new build with less than 100 test miles was built by Bill Jordan, the Cobra expert who appeared on the world-renowned “South Beach Classics” TV show with Ted Vernon.
Barrett-Jackson’s Automobilia Auction started the action off early in the morning with 100 more authentic pieces of the past making their way across the block. The top seller was Lot #6387 at $23,000 – a stunning 1960s Everfrost soda fountain restored to the highest standards both cosmetically and to full functionality by McLaren Classic Restorations.
Nearly 200 fine collectible vehicles were on the Barrett-Jackson auction block today, resulting in six new world records at auction, including a 1997 Land Rover Defender (Lot #637) and a 2001 AM General Hummer H1 Wagon (Lot #701) – each selling for $128,700 – and a 1963 Lincoln Continental Convertible (Lot #663), which brought in $110,000. The top sellers of the day included a one-of-one Voodoo Blue 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder (Lot #750) that sold for $1,760,000, a 1971 Plymouth HEMI ’Cuda (Lot #751) that sold for $396,000 and a 1965 Porsche 356 Custom Convertible (Lot #765) that sold for $315,700.
A number of familiar faces were on hand to witness the memorable events of the auction, including Las Vegas icons Wayne Newton and Roy Horn (of Siegfried & Roy), Randy Meisner (founding member of the Eagles and Poco), lawyer Robert Shapiro, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada and former MLB player Shane Victorino.
Barrett-Jackson is extremely grateful to all our sponsors, consignors, bidders and attendees who came out to support this event, and is honored to have played a part in the healing of the great city of Las Vegas. May we all remain #VegasStrong!
